Veterinarian, Medical Director

Global Talent Partners is delighted to present an exciting opportunity for an experienced veterinarian to step into a Medical Director role at an established, community-focused veterinary hospital in the greater Rochester, New York area.

The Opportunity

As Medical Director, you'll work closely with the Practice Manager and wider leadership team to maintain high clinical standards, strengthen team culture and support the continued development of the hospital.
You'll have the opportunity to mentor veterinarians and support staff, encourage clinical learning, improve workflows and help establish a shared vision for the hospital's future.

The position combines leadership responsibilities with a varied clinical caseload, making it particularly well suited to a veterinarian who enjoys supporting others while remaining actively involved in general practice.

Key responsibilities include:

•Providing clinical leadership and promoting consistently high standards of patient care.
•Mentoring veterinarians and supporting the professional development of the wider hospital team.
•Working collaboratively with the Practice Manager to improve hospital operations and team performance.
•Building strong relationships with clients through excellent communication and compassionate care.
•Delivering a varied caseload of wellness, medical, surgical and dental appointments.
•Encouraging clinical collaboration, knowledge-sharing and continuous improvement.
•Contributing to the hospital's long-term development while preserving its welcoming, community-oriented culture.

About the Hospital

You'll join an established veterinary hospital with approximately 3.5 veterinarian FTEs and a dedicated support team, including a reported two-to-one technician-to-veterinarian ratio. The team benefits from experienced, long-serving colleagues who understand their clients and patients and value working together.

The hospital features four examination rooms, a dedicated surgical suite and a separate treatment area for dental procedures. Its equipment includes digital radiography, digital dental radiography and a portable ultrasound, supporting a broad range of diagnostic and treatment needs. The practice also uses Vetspire practice management software.

One of the hospital's standout features is its diverse patient population. Alongside dogs and cats, the team treats birds, reptiles, fish and pocket pets, offering an opportunity to develop or expand an interest in exotic animal medicine. Previous exotic experience is welcomed but is not essential.
The hospital also accommodates selected same-day urgent appointments for sick patients, adding variety to the caseload while maintaining a general practice focus.

You'll be joining a team that values continuity, collaboration and a positive client experience. The incoming Medical Director will have the opportunity to build on these foundations, support colleagues' development and help guide the next chapter of an established local practice.

Schedule and Work-Life Balance

•Full-time position, approximately 40 hours per week.
•Ideally four 10-hour shifts, with rotating Saturdays.
•Hospital hours are Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m.6 p.m.; Friday, 8 a.m.5 p.m.; and Saturday, 8 a.m.2 p.m.
•No overnight shifts are indicated.
•Surgery is generally scheduled for one morning each week, with appointments in the afternoon, although scheduling can be adapted to doctor preference.
•A Medical Director stipend and associated protected administrative time support the leadership component of the role.

This schedule offers a practical alternative to traditional five-day veterinary positions, with the potential for a three-day break during a four-day working week, depending on the rota.

Compensation and Benefits

The hospital is offering a competitive compensation package designed to recognise both your clinical contribution and leadership responsibilities.

•Annual compensation range: $170,000$190,000 under a full-time ProSal model, based on credentials and experience.
•Additional Medical Director stipend: Paid biweekly, with a substantial component of protected administrative time.
•Production incentives: An enhanced production percentage and quarterly production bonus payments.
•Sign-on bonus: Up to $50,000.
•Retention bonus: Up to $25,000, paid over three years.
•Relocation support: Available for eligible candidates.
•No negative accrual: Production compensation is structured without negative accrual.
•Comprehensive benefits: Eligible team members have access to health and life insurance, short- and long-term disability coverage, a 401(k) match, mental health resources and additional wellbeing support.
•Professional development: Opportunities to mentor colleagues, expand clinical interests and develop as a veterinary leader.

Final compensation will depend on experience, qualifications, location and the overall package agreed.

About You

We're looking for an approachable, experienced veterinarian who combines sound clinical judgement with strong communication and leadership skills. You'll enjoy working collaboratively, sharing knowledge and creating an environment where colleagues feel supported and motivated to develop.

You'll ideally bring:

•A DVM, VMD or equivalent veterinary qualification.
•At least 23 years of clinical experience, with the confidence to support and guide other veterinarians.
•A current veterinary licence in the state of employment, in good standing before starting.
•An active DEA registration or eligibility to obtain one.
•Confidence in general practice surgery, dentistry, wellness care and the management of sick patients.
•Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build trust with colleagues and clients.
•An interest in mentoring, team development and continuous clinical improvement.
•Flexibility, a positive attitude and a willingness to contribute to the wider success of the hospital.

An interest in exotic animal medicine would be a welcome advantage, although previous exotic experience is not a requirement.
