Veterinarian - Medical Director

Our client is seeking an experienced Emergency Veterinarian to step into the role of Medical Director at a leading Emergency & Specialty Veterinary Hospital in Austin, Texas.

This is an exceptional opportunity for a clinician who enjoys balancing hands-on emergency medicine with meaningful leadership. The successful candidate will play a key role in guiding the Emergency Department while continuing to practice high-quality medicine in a collaborative, specialist-supported environment.

You'll work alongside a team of highly regarded board-certified specialists across multiple disciplines, including Oncology, Orthopedic Surgery, Soft Tissue Surgery, Critical Care & Diagnostic Imaging, and additional specialty services. This multidisciplinary approach provides an outstanding environment for managing complex referral cases, continual professional development, and delivering the highest standard of patient care.

The Opportunity

This position offers an approximately 50/50 split between clinical practice and leadership responsibilities, allowing you to remain actively involved in emergency medicine while helping lead and develop an experienced clinical team.

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Provide clinical leadership for the Emergency and ICU teams.
  • Mentor and support veterinarians, technicians, and nursing staff through coaching and professional development.
  • Develop and refine medical protocols, clinical workflows, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Foster a collaborative culture centred on clinical excellence, accountability, and continuous learning.
  • Work closely with board-certified specialists to ensure seamless patient care across departments.
  • Strengthen relationships with referring veterinary practices throughout the Austin metropolitan area.
  • Help shape the strategic direction of the Emergency Service while enhancing both clinical quality and client experience.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Manage a varied caseload of emergency and critical care patients.
  • Perform emergency surgical procedures where appropriate and within your level of expertise.
  • Deliver evidence-based medicine supported by advanced diagnostic and treatment capabilities.
  • Collaborate with specialists on complex referral and emergency cases requiring multidisciplinary care.

Schedule

You'll join a team of six Emergency Veterinarians with a structured rota designed to promote both continuity of care and work-life balance.

  • Typically 12-13 shifts per month
  • One weekend shift per schedule
  • Approximately 1-2 overnight rotations per month (rota varies)
  • Around 50% of your time dedicated to leadership and administrative responsibilities

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary: $175,000 - $225,000, depending on experience
  • 25% production bonus

What Our Client Is Looking For

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD)
  • Active Texas veterinary licence (or eligibility to obtain)
  • Minimum of 3 - 5 years' experience in Emergency or Critical Care practice
  • Previous leadership, mentorship, or supervisory experience is highly desirable
  • Strong communication, organisational, and decision-making skills
  • A collaborative leadership style with a passion for mentoring and developing others
  • A commitment to delivering exceptional patient care and clinical excellence
