Key Duties

Diagnosing and treating complex medical conditions in animals, including those related to the digestive, cardiovascular, respiratory, and urinary systems
Conducting comprehensive physical exams and laboratory tests, such as blood work, X-rays, and ultrasound, to diagnose and monitor medical conditions
Developing treatment plans, including medications, therapies, and dietary recommendations, to manage and treat medical conditions
Communicating with pet owners and referring veterinarians to provide updates on the pet's condition, prognosis, and recommended treatment
Collaborating with other veterinary specialists, such as surgeons and radiologists, to provide comprehensive care for pets with multiple or complex medical conditions
Staying current with advances in veterinary medicine and continuously updating their knowledge and skills to provide the best care for their patients
Maintaining accurate and thorough medical records, documenting all diagnostic and treatment plans, and updating them regularly

Key Skills, Qualifications & Client Requirements

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an accredited veterinary school
Successful completion of a rigorous three-year residency program in veterinary internal medicine, accredited by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM)
Successful passing of the certification examination given by the ACVIM
Active veterinary license in good standing in the state where they practice
Strong clinical skills, including physical examination and diagnostic procedures such as laboratory tests, radiography, and ultrasonography
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively communicate with pet owners, referring veterinarians, and other veterinary specialists
Knowledge of current veterinary medical practices and a commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment
Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple cases and tasks simultaneously
Compassion for animals and a commitment to providing high-quality veterinary care
