Key Duties

  • A Veterinary Medical Director is responsible for overseeing the medical operations and staff of a veterinary clinic, hospital, or organization.
  • Ensuring high-quality veterinary care: The Veterinary Medical Director is responsible for ensuring that the veterinary practice provides the highest quality care for animals. They must ensure that the staff is trained in the latest medical techniques and that the clinic has the necessary equipment and supplies to provide excellent veterinary care
  • Managing staff: The Veterinary Medical Director is responsible for managing the staff, including hiring, training, scheduling, and providing ongoing support and feedback. They must also ensure that the staff follows all regulations, policies, and procedures, and that they provide excellent customer service to clients
  • Monitoring the health of animals: The Veterinary Medical Director must ensure that all animals are healthy and receive the proper medical care they need. They may review medical records, examine animals, and provide medical treatment
  • Developing protocols and policies: The Veterinary Medical Director must develop and implement protocols and policies for the veterinary practice to ensure that all staff members follow the same guidelines for animal care, handling, and record-keeping

Key Skills, Qualifications & Client Requirements

  • Veterinary degree: The Veterinary Medical Director must have a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an accredited institution and a license to practice veterinary medicine
  • Management and leadership skills: The Veterinary Medical Director must have excellent management and leadership skills to effectively lead and manage a team of veterinary professionals and staff members.
  • Strong communication skills: The Veterinary Medical Director should have strong communication skills to effectively communicate with clients, staff members, and other stakeholders
  • Attention to detail: The Veterinary Medical Director must have a keen eye for detail to ensure that all animals receive proper medical treatment and that all records are accurately maintained
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills: The Veterinary Medical Director must have strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to diagnose and treat complex medical conditions and to manage any issues that arise within the practice
