Key Duties

  • Diagnosis of cancer: The veterinary oncologist is responsible for diagnosing cancer in animals. This involves a comprehensive evaluation of the animal's medical history, clinical signs, and laboratory test results. The oncologist may use imaging studies, such as X-rays, ultrasounds, and CT scans, to confirm a cancer diagnosis
  • Treatment planning: The veterinary oncologist develops a treatment plan based on the type and stage of cancer, the animal's age, overall health, and owner preferences. Treatment options may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or a combination of these modalities
  • Administration of cancer treatments: The oncologist administers chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and other cancer treatments. They monitor the animal's response to treatment and adjust the treatment plan as needed
  • Pain management: The oncologist is responsible for managing the animal's pain and discomfort during cancer treatment. They may prescribe pain medications, recommend alternative therapies, and make adjustments to the treatment plan to improve the animal's quality of life

Key Skills, Qualifications & Client Requirements

  • Advanced education and training: A veterinary oncologist must complete a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree and then undergo specialized training in oncology through a residency program. The residency typically lasts for three years and provides hands-on training in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer in animals
  • Knowledge of veterinary oncology: A veterinary oncologist must have a deep understanding of the pathophysiology of cancer, the principles of oncology treatment, and the available treatment modalities. They must also stay up to date with the latest research and advancements in the field
  • Strong diagnostic skills: A veterinary oncologist must be able to accurately diagnose different types of cancer and determine the stage of the disease. This requires strong diagnostic skills, including the ability to interpret laboratory test results and imaging studies
  • Excellent communication skills: A veterinary oncologist must be able to communicate effectively with animal owners, veterinary staff, and other specialists. They must be able to explain complex medical concepts in a way that is easy for others to understand and provide emotional support to both animal owners and the animal
  • Licensing and certification: In addition to obtaining a DVM degree and completing a residency program, veterinary oncologists must obtain a state license to practice veterinary medicine. They may also choose to obtain certification from the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) in the oncology specialty
