Key Duties

  • Diagnosing and treating complex medical conditions in animals, including those related to the digestive, cardiovascular, respiratory, and urinary systems
  • Conducting comprehensive physical exams and laboratory tests, such as blood work, X-rays, and ultrasound, to diagnose and monitor medical conditions
  • Developing treatment plans, including medications, therapies, and dietary recommendations, to manage and treat medical conditions
  • Collaborating with other veterinary specialists, such as surgeons and radiologists, to provide comprehensive care for pets with multiple or complex medical conditions
  • Staying current with advances in veterinary medicine and continuously updating their knowledge and skills to provide the best care for their patients

Key Skills, Qualifications & Client Requirements

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an accredited veterinary school
  • Successful completion of a rigorous three-year residency program in veterinary internal medicine, accredited by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM)
  • Successful passing of the certification examination given by the ACVIM
  • Active veterinary license in good standing in the state where they practice
  • Strong clinical skills, including physical examination and diagnostic procedures such as laboratory tests, radiography, and ultrasonography
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively communicate with pet owners, referring veterinarians, and other veterinary specialists
  • Knowledge of current veterinary medical practices and a commitment to continuous learning and professional development
  • Compassion for animals and a commitment to providing high-quality veterinary care
